It is midnight and the video is almost ready. All that is missing is the caption. The caption leads to a reply in the comments, which leads to a quick look at the metrics, which brings to mind a saved reference. Before you know it, another hour has slipped into the workday.
That “one last thing” is not simply a lack of discipline about going to bed. In the Creator Economy Report 2026, 8.4% of 1,000 Creators surveyed in the United States said they spend 20 to 40 hours per week creating content. For part of the market, creating already takes up a significant share of the week, but it does not always come with a clear time to close the door.
That is why a sleep routine makes a difference: not to force everyone to create early, but to help you work at night without letting the workday stretch indefinitely into your rest.
How Much Sleep Does an Adult Really Need?
For adults ages 18 to 60, the CDC recommends 7 or more hours of sleep per day. Needs vary, but an adult sleep routine needs to reserve real time for rest instead of relying only on whatever is left in the calendar. Most importantly, it needs to be restorative.
In 2024, 30.5% of adults in the United States slept fewer than seven hours on average in a 24-hour period, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The data is from the United States, but it shows that sleeping below the recommendation is far from unusual.
Adult Sleep Routine: Why Can Creating Content at Night Disrupt Your Rest?
A content platform can stay awake around the clock, but our bodies run on a different clock. The circadian rhythm follows cycles of about 24 hours, which means our biological clock responds to the natural cycle of light and darkness: light helps the body understand that it is time to stay awake, while less light helps prepare it for sleep.
According to the NHLBI, bright artificial light late at night, including light from screens, can interfere with this process and make it harder to fall asleep. Real life, however, rarely follows that clock so precisely.
For many Creators, especially those who also balance content creation with another job, nighttime is precisely the time available to record, edit or plan. So, rather than simply avoiding work at night, it makes sense to create strategies that reduce stimulation close to bedtime and build a transition between screens, work and rest.
How to Organize Your Routine Before Bed
The livestream ends, but the workday continues: save the clip, reply to comments, check metrics, open tomorrow’s reference. Without a clear boundary, rest becomes the easiest thing to keep pushing back.

The NHLBI recommends relatively regular times for going to sleep and waking up, along with a period before bed with calmer activities and less intense artificial light.
Create a Ritual to End the Workday
A bedtime routine does not need to be perfect or rigid. It needs to signal that creating is over for today. Small steps can already make a big difference:
- Set a realistic stopping time
- Still have things to do? Schedule posts when you do not need to monitor them live, and save late-night ideas in a list for the next day.
- Silence notifications and reduce stimulation close to bedtime to help sleep come.
- Keep the lights low, avoid using your phone in bed, and try replacing that feed scroll with something less stimulating, such as a book or meditation.

When to Seek Help
If difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep persists, if you experience excessive daytime sleepiness or if sleep is affecting your routine, it is worth talking to a healthcare professional. The CDC recommends seeking guidance when sleep problems happen frequently.
